The Harmonized Gospel

Chapter 6

[Ministry of John the Baptist – Mt 3:1-4; Mk 1:1-5; Lk 3:1-18, Jn 1:6-18]

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;  2 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,  3 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.

4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.  5 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.  6 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;  7 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.  8 And the same John was clothed with camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey.

9 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.  10 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.  11 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.  12 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.  13 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.  14 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.  15 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:  16 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.  17 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  18 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.  19 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.  20 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.  21 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

22 In those days came John the Baptist into all the country about Jordan, in the wilderness of Judaea, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins,  23 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. This is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias.

24 And there went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,  25 And were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

26 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?  27 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance:  28 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.  29 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  30 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?  31 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.

32 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?  33 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.  34 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.  35 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;  36 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance:  37 But he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to to stoop down and unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:  38 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

39 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
